Kamui Cosplay is a world-famous two-person cosplay team based out of Germany. They started creating costumes, armor, and props in 2003 and have not stopped since! They work together to bring incredible costumes to life! They specialize in large armor pieces, lights, smoke, and intricate paint/design work.
What’s the nerdiest thing about you?
I think being a cosplayer is already quite nerdy. Playing video-games and reading comics is already one thing, but spending hundreds of dollar for crafting materials and working weeks on month on a costume just to bring your favorite character to life is probably pretty much next level.
What character from pop culture do you identify with?
I really like strong female warriors and enjoy video-games a lot. So Wonder Woman is obviously on my list, but I also love Warrior Princess Xena, Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn or Brigitte from Overwatch. Those are also characters I already cosplayed or working on right now.
What are you nostalgic for?
As a kid always watched Warrior Princess Xena with my mother. I absolutely loved Xena and I think she also really influenced me a lot back then. When I got into cosplay my mum didn’t understand the whole dressing-up thing though and she didn’t really cared much about it. However when I started working on my Warrior Princess Xena cosplay my mum suddenly got hooked, was really excited about all my costume progress and flipped out when I showed her some photos of me wearing the costume. Since then she finally understood what cosplay is about – bringing your favorite hero to life – and is now really excited about everything I do.
What inspires you?
I follow plenty of amazing artist over social media. I love following them working on their own projects, experimenting with new materials and new techniques. They inspire me a lot not to be scared of something new and create tutorials myself. The cosplay community is just absolutely amazing and it feels like we are all a huge, international family supporting each other!
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I play a lot of video games like World of Warcraft, Monster Hunter World, Animal Crossing and other games that literally never ends. I also have two super sweet corgis, so I spend a lot of time outside. However even if I’m self-employed and cosplay is basically my job, I never see it really as work. So I truly enjoy working on my projects and often forget time when I work on something.
How do you stay sane?
I just keep on working. I have so many ideas for crafting books, costume patterns and new costumes in mind. I really never gets boring. In addition I call my friends and family a lot every day. I have around 3 to 4 video calls every day and it’s not just fun, but is also quite interesting to talk with people all over the world and see how it’s going over at their place. In addition it’s a great opportunity to get in touch with friends I didn’t saw for weeks or months, so I just try to do my best in the current situation.
